7 Design Secrets You Would Have Never Imagined!

There's a whole world behind the design of spaces, and there's much to learn about it!

The design world has always been a mystery, and people are often left wondering how those in it manage to create amazing spaces with the same things they have inside their rooms, and how they find the balance of aesthetics that makes an interior decorated area stand out from others. Interior designers have a way to make their designs look both cozy and stylish, inviting even, without sacrificing anything while also adding the personality that we want inside our home. There’s a whole world of knowledge behind the things that they do, and while they make it look effortless, it rarely is! It requires them to have a trained eye to find what makes a room look like a million dollars with simple techniques that you can apply to your rooms too. That’s why I’m here to let you know the best kept secrets of the design world and how you can apply them to your spaces! I consulted with several interior designers to teach you the things you should know about something so unique as home and business design.

Bigger is NOT always better
Designers know the importance of the size in the pieces they are going to locate in the spaces they create. “Bigger pieces of furniture means less space to personalize with accents” was one of the things they told me. They look for mobiliary with just the right size, keeping a nice line with the rest of the decoration, while allowing space to create storage areas, without having the decor cluttered by too big pieces. This is especially important for small spaces, and they work it to their advantage!

Colors are EVERYTHING!
People often wonder what makes some rooms look fabulous, and let me answer that question for you: it’s color. Most designers know right off the bat that some things are meant to be, and color and decor are one of those cases. They make sure to find the perfect balance of the room by adding strategical pops of neutral or bright colors, according to the overall idea. “It makes the space look more vibrant, even if it’s some white on a colorful backdrop”.

This is also important when it comes to creating rooms that look amazing just with focusing on a certain palette. Like I’ve mentioned before, picking a color combination makes it easier to find the pieces that will fit in, and to have a more focused furniture and decor hunt trip.

ALWAYS Sectionate spaces
The design of a room is a game of location, location, location. “There’s nothing more terrible to design than having things scattered around a room, so ground them with something and separate those areas to make it look coherent”. This means that you have to make sure that every space is sectioned, whether that is by making a visual partition with a furniture bar, a modern folding screen or just by placing the furniture inside a rug. The idea is for people to see spaces as separate areas, this also adds the polished look that decor needs.

Don’t go with the flow
Something unsettling to the eye is to make something seemed different from what it is. Sometimes, people pick furniture to fit in with others opinions, when it should be something that you love, regardless of what others think. “We like to get to know our clients in order to find what makes them go ‘YES!’, and then we look for the pieces to fit their ideas.” The idea is that the rooms are entirely their own, and sometimes this means going against the flow of what’s trending. For example, using vintage pieces instead of newer ones, or going just all the way and get one different and unique designed just for you.

Measure MORE than twice
One of the worse things that can happen to a designer is amazing looking designs, but that just won’t fit in, sometimes quite literally. That’s why one of their secrets is to always look for furniture and decor with a measuring tape in their pockets. “We need to make sure that what we pick fits inside the space, and not just aesthetic wise!”. They make sure that everything will look coherent next to each other, so they take notes and go back to measure every area if necessary.

Use the RIGHT curtains
While for some people is not an option, picking the perfect pieces to work as a backdrop to furniture is key to make them stand out. “One thing that I always do is placing a bone colored fabric between my window and the curtain rod, that way the light gets filtered and soft before the actual curtain.” This helps the space look softer in terms of light, without the direct glow of it. “It also avoids the house to look like a carnival from outside!”. Curtains also help make a room look taller, as by placing them from ceiling to floor in long columns creates an elongating illusion.

Highlight the flaws
I know it sounds contradictory, but highlighting something that you think is is a flaw can add visual interest and personality to a room. Use things like exposed beams, brick walls, small windows as something inherent  and personal to the room. Make sure to use pieces that will work better with it to create the coherent look that you need inside your spaces, adding the unique touch that this so-called flaws add. “Flaws add the personality your room needs!”
